Shared ownership gives community groups the chance to make an investment in a commercially owned renewable energy project. Shared ownership is separate and additional to Community Benefits (ie the voluntary initiative to support communities – usually in the form of funds).

It is the Scottish Government’s ambition “to encourage the renewables industry to consider, explore and offer shared ownership opportunities as standard on all new renewable energy projects including repowering and extensions to existing projects”. For more information, see section 1.4.3 of the Scottish Government’s Onshore Wind Policy Statement 2022.

We deliver the Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES) for the Scottish Government. CARES provides funding to support communities to engage with, participate in, and benefit from the energy transition to net zero emissions.

We can provide you with impartial support and advice. We can also help you to access CARES funding and contractors for project management, financial matters, legal matters, and ensure you have all the information to decide if shared ownership is right for your community.
